Gelum Boss Guide - Complete Strategy
Complete strategy guide for defeating Gelum, the Frost Warden, including attack patterns, weaknesses, recommended loadouts, and phase-by-phase tactics.
Gelum, the Frost Warden, is the first major boss most players encounter in Anvil Quest. This guide covers every attack pattern, the safest windows to deal damage, and the loadouts that make this fight trivial.
Boss Overview
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Recommended Level | 8+ |
| HP | 4,200 |
| Weakness | Fire |
| Resistance | Ice |
| Location | Frostspire Keep, Shattered Isles Act 1 |
Gelum is a gatekeeper boss — if you can’t beat him comfortably, you are not ready for the mid-game. The good news: he has a strict, learnable pattern.
Phase 1: Ice Shard Volley (100% – 66% HP)
Gelum opens the fight by firing three ice shards in a spread pattern. The shards travel at medium speed and deal 180 damage on a direct hit.
Counter: Strafe right. All three shards fan out left-to-right, so constant rightward movement dodges every volley without burning your dash.
Phase 2: Frozen Ground (66% – 33% HP)
At 66% HP, Gelum slams the ground and creates expanding ice rings. Getting hit freezes you for 2 seconds — usually fatal because he follows up with a shard volley.
Counter: Jump over each ring. The timing is generous (0.4s window per ring). Save your dash for the follow-up volley, not the rings.
Phase 3: Blizzard Enrage (33% – 0% HP)
Below 33% HP, Gelum enters enrage: movement speed +30%, shard volley becomes five shards instead of three, and frozen ground rings spawn twice as fast.
Counter: Pop your fire potion at the start of Phase 3. The fire buff cancels the freeze effect entirely, removing the deadliest mechanic from the fight.
Recommended Loadout
| Slot | Item | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Emberclaw (fire) | Double damage against ice-weak bosses |
| Armor | Frostpike set | +40 ice resist |
| Consumable | Greater Fire Potion | Cancels freeze in Phase 3 |
| Accessory | Crit Charm | Gelum’s head is a 2x crit zone during shard wind-up |
Common Mistakes
- Dodging into the shards. New players panic-dash forward and eat all three shards. Strafe, don’t dash, in Phase 1.
- Using dash on frozen ground rings. Dash has a 6-second cooldown. You need it for the shard follow-up. Jump the rings instead.
- Forgetting the fire potion. Phase 3 without fire buff is a 50/50 coinflip. With it, the fight is essentially over.
Rewards
| Drop | Drop Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Frostpike Shard | 100% | Quest item, always drops |
| Glacial Gem | 35% | Used to craft Frostpike weapons |
| Gelum’s Helm (cosmetic) | 5% | Rare cosmetic, no stats |
| 850 coins | 100% | Flat reward |
TL;DR
Strafe right in Phase 1. Jump the rings in Phase 2. Pop fire potion at the start of Phase 3. Bring Emberclaw. You win.
